NASA's astronaut candidate programme typically receives 12,000–18,000 applications per class and selects 8–12 candidates — under 0.1% of applicants. Selection requires a STEM master's degree, 1,000+ hours of pilot-in-command jet time or three years of professional STEM experience, and successful completion of a long-duration physical and psychological evaluation.
