Biography
Flew the first year-long spaceflight with Musa Manarov aboard Mir in 1987-88, then became one of the first cosmonauts to fly on the US Space Shuttle.
Before NASASoviet Air Force pilot who graduated from the Higher Air Force College in Chernihiv in 1970 and served as a pilot-instructor training twelve student pilots before accumulating over 1,400 hours flying time across ten aircraft types.

Fun fact
On 27 September 1983, Titov and Gennady Strekalov became two of only four humans ever to use a launch escape system in a real emergency — their Soyuz rocket caught fire on the pad and exploded seconds after the capsule rocketed them to safety, with the crew experiencing forces of about 14–17 g during the escape.
