GNC engineers design the control laws, state estimators, and trajectory algorithms that fly every launch vehicle, lander, and spacecraft. It's a math-heavy software role — Kalman filters, optimal control, trajectory optimization — sitting at the intersection of aerospace, controls, and software engineering. GNC bugs caused the Mars Climate Orbiter loss and Boeing Starliner OFT-1 anomaly.
Take the full controls sequence: linear systems, classical & modern control, optimal control, estimation. Robotics labs are excellent training because most have real plants to control.
MIT 16.30/16.32, Stanford AA 203/279, Georgia Tech AE 4515, Texas ASE 366L, UMich AE 540. Research lab experience separates GNC engineers from generic controls engineers.

First 2–3 years: own a sub-mode (e.g., on-orbit attitude hold), build 6-DOF Monte Carlo coverage, integrate flight software, support hardware-in-the-loop testing.
Senior GNC engineers own ascent guidance, entry/descent/landing, rendezvous & docking, or a full vehicle's GNC system. Expect to work nights during launch campaigns and Mars EDLs.

The hardest part
GNC bugs surface during the worst possible 30 seconds of a mission. The discipline demands paranoia: every off-nominal must be Monte-Carloed, every state estimator must be observable, every transition must be tested. Documentation and review culture matter more than code velocity.
