Space business development professionals create the revenue that funds the missions — structuring multi-year launch contracts, pitching government agencies on new capabilities, negotiating rideshare agreements, and building commercial relationships in an industry where a handful of operators control global launch capacity. The role blends technical literacy (you must understand what you're selling) with deal-making, market strategy, and government relations at the intersection of defense, civil, and commercial space.
An engineering undergrad is increasingly valued because clients buy on technical credibility. Business and international relations degrees are also strong pipelines. A minor in the other is worth more than most MBAs at early career.
First roles often include: launch sales analyst at a vehicle company, market intelligence at a satellite operator, contracts coordinator, or proposal writer on a large government RFP. Government procurement (FAR/DFARS literacy) is a specialized skill in high demand.
Credibility in BD is deal-based. Close your first rideshare agreement, win your first IDIQ task order, or land a multi-year hosted-payload contract. Mentors and senior technical colleagues who can vouch for your reliability matter enormously in this relationship-driven industry.
Owns a territory, sector (civil, DoD, international), or product line. Manages a pipeline of $50M–$500M+ in potential contracts, leads customer interactions with agency leadership, and feeds product roadmap input back to engineering.
At scale: accountable for revenue targets, manages BD teams across geographies, negotiates the anchor contracts that define the company's manifest or constellation. MBA is common at this level but far from universal — most VPs in this industry came up through technical or government-relations tracks.

The hardest part
Deal cycles are brutally long. A government launch services contract can take 18–36 months from first conversation to signature; a satellite capacity deal can stall for years on ITU coordination. You must maintain relationships across very long timescales, survive pipeline droughts, and resist pressure to oversell technical capabilities you don't yet have.
