About This Suit
The Gemini G4C was the primary EVA-capable Gemini suit, built by David Clark Company from a lineage descending from X-15 high-altitude pilot suits. Added to the G3C base design were multiple Mylar insulation layers providing thermal protection in the extreme temperature swings of open space (−250°F to +250°F). It was compatible with the Extravehicular Life Support System (ELSS) chest pack which supplied oxygen during umbilical-tethered EVA. On June 3, 1965, Ed White wore a G4C for the first American spacewalk during Gemini 4 — a 23-minute EVA that proved humans could maneuver, work, and survive outside a spacecraft. White's maneuvering gun used for propulsion became the conceptual predecessor of the EMU's SAFER backpack.
