The world's first operational spacesuit — worn by Yuri Gagarin on humanity's first trip to space.
The SK-1 (Skafandr Kosmicheskiy-1, or 'Space Suit-1') was the world's first operational pressure suit used in human spaceflight. Developed by NPP Zvezda under Chief Designer Gai Severin, it was worn by all six cosmonauts of the Vostok program between 1961 and 1963. Since Vostok capsules landed with the cosmonaut ejecting at altitude, the SK-1 doubled as a high-altitude pressure suit enabling independent parachute descent. Its aluminized orange outer shell provided both thermal protection and high visibility for search-and-rescue crews. A female variant, the SK-2, was produced for Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space.
