About This Suit
The SpaceX IVA suit is a radical visual and functional departure from traditional NASA spacesuit design. Created entirely in-house at SpaceX with aesthetic input from Hollywood costume designer Jose Fernandez and Elon Musk, it is a one-piece suit worn from launch through splashdown on all Crew Dragon missions. Its defining features include a 3D-printed polycarbonate helmet with integrated microphone and speaker, single-thigh umbilical connection to Dragon's life support, and touchscreen-sensitive gloves designed specifically for Dragon's capacitive touchscreen displays — a requirement no previous spacesuit had to meet. 'Starman,' a dressed mannequin, was the suit's public debut in the first Falcon Heavy launch in February 2018. The suit has since carried over 30 astronauts to the ISS and represented a generation-defining shift in what commercial spacesuits could look and feel like.
