Space robotics engineers design, program, and operate robotic systems in space — from the ISS Canadarm2 and Dextre to Mars rovers (Curiosity, Perseverance), lunar probes, and next-generation on-orbit servicing robots. The role sits at the intersection of mechanical engineering, software systems, and real-time control, and is one of the most interdisciplinary disciplines in the industry. A single bug in a contact-dynamics model can send a $2B rover into a rock.
Core coursework: dynamics, control systems, mechatronics, embedded systems. Join a FIRST Robotics team, university rover team (University Rover Challenge, ERC), or CubeSat project. Hands-on hardware experience is non-negotiable — hiring managers look for bench time.
Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute, MIT CSAIL, Stanford AI Lab, ETH Zürich Autonomous Systems Lab, and Caltech ME are the apex programs. A master's is sufficient for most industry roles; a PhD opens instrument PI and research-scientist positions at JPL and NASA.
Target: JPL (Robotic Vehicles Group, Manipulation Group), NASA JSC (Robonaut), MDA Space (Canadarm heritage), Honeybee Robotics, Motiv Space Systems, Astroscale, Maxar SSL. CMU's RI intern pipeline feeds JPL and Carnegie Science Center planetary labs directly.
First 2–4 years: own a manipulator joint, write contact-dynamics simulation code, develop FPGA motor-control firmware, or build visual-odometry pipelines. ROS/ROS2 is the lingua franca; C++ and Python are both required.
Senior robotics engineers lead an entire system (e.g., ISRO rover mobility, Astroscale ELSA-M capture mechanism), serve as a Mission Robotics System Engineer on a planetary flagship, or stand console as Robotics Flight Controller during ISS Canadarm2 operations.

The hardest part
The communication-delay problem never goes away. Operators on Earth can't teleoperate a Mars rover in real-time (up to 24-minute one-way delay); the robot must be autonomous enough to survive. Designing for safe autonomy in an unstructured, unknown environment — and convincing a conservative agency review board that it's safe — is the hardest unsolved problem in the field.
