Avionics engineers design and integrate the electronic brain of a spacecraft: flight computers, sensor suites (IMUs, star trackers, sun sensors), power distribution units, data buses (SpaceWire, MIL-STD-1553, CAN, UART), and the wiring harness that ties everything together. The role is deliberately split between hardware (schematic capture in Altium/Cadence, PCB layout, radiation testing, component derating) and software (C/C++ bare-metal firmware, FPGA logic in VHDL/Verilog, BSP development). Radiation-hardened processors — the BAE RAD750, GR712RC LEON4, or NXP QorIQ — dominate flight hardware. Note: UK and European salaries from Surrey Satellite, QinetiQ, or ESA staff positions are typically 30–40% below the US commercial figures listed here.
Core circuits, digital logic, microcontrollers, and embedded C. Senior capstone with real hardware (FPGA, PCB) is nearly mandatory for a first industry role. Strong GPA opens NASA Pathways.
Specialise in FPGA-based fault-tolerant computing, SpaceWire protocol, or radiation effects on CMOS. MSc at Surrey or TU Delft gives direct contact with SmallSat mission hardware.
Own the design of one board (e.g., power conditioning unit or IMU interface card). Write the firmware BSP, perform bench characterisation, and run vibration and thermal-vacuum acceptance tests.
Lead the avionics subsystem for a CubeSat or instrument from Phase A through launch. Responsible for component selection, radiation lot acceptance testing (RLAT), and FMEA sign-off.
Define the avionics architecture for a new vehicle or platform. Chair Avionics Design Reviews with customers and certifying agencies. Mentor a team of 5–15 engineers across hardware and firmware.

The hardest part
Radiation qualification. The gap between 'it works on the bench' and 'it works after 10 years of Van Allen belt exposure' is enormous and expensive. When your FPGA configuration memory is hit by a heavy ion and the spacecraft resets at Jupiter encounter, no patch is coming — the fault tolerance must be designed in from day one. Getting that right requires analysis skills most EE graduates have never practiced.
