Space Systems Engineering is the integrating discipline — you own the requirements, interfaces, and verification strategy that bind propulsion, avionics, thermal, structures, GNC, and flight software into a single working vehicle. At NASA and ESA you spend years in requirements management tools (DOORS, Jama) and interface control documents; at commercial launch companies the pace is faster and your scope can span hardware and software in the same week. Entry-level roles are often titled 'Systems Engineer I' or 'Mission Systems Analyst.' Note: ESA staff-grade salaries (AD5–AD8 scale) typically run €60K–€110K — materially below US commercial benchmarks listed here.
Core coursework in dynamics, controls, thermodynamics, and circuit theory. Capstone satellite or rocket design project is highly valued. GPA matters for NASA Pathways and ESA YGT applications.
Deepen model-based systems engineering (MBSE), SysML, and reliability analysis. Programs at TU Delft, MIT, or ISAE-SUPAERO give direct access to European and US industry pipelines.
Own the interface control document for one subsystem (e.g., power-to-avionics ICD). Learn to run PDR/CDR artifacts, manage requirement traceability matrices, and write verification plans in DOORS or Jama.
Chair interface working groups across propulsion, thermal, GNC, and software. Drive trade studies. Sign off on ICDs. Maintain the mass, power, and link-budget roll-ups that define margin.
Own the technical baseline for a full mission or vehicle program. Present at NASA/ESA independent review boards. Mentor junior engineers and define processes for the next generation of vehicles.

The hardest part
Holding the technical baseline against constant schedule pressure. Every subsystem team will argue their interface requirement is too tight; your job is to say no with math, not opinion. The real killer is late-breaking requirement changes at CDR+6 months — you must trace the ripple through 400 ICDs while everyone else has moved on.
