Biography
Five-flight astronaut and the only American woman to serve aboard Mir, where her 188-day stay set the single-flight record for women of her era. First woman awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
Before NASABiochemist who worked as a senior laboratory technician at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and as a research chemist at Kerr-McGee before earning her PhD in biochemistry from the University of Oklahoma and joining NASA's first astronaut class to include women in 1978.

After reading about rocket pioneer Robert Goddard as a child, Lucid sold her bicycle to buy a telescope and began building her own rockets; decades later she spent 188 days aboard the Russian space station Mir in 1996, setting a world record for a woman and the U.S. single-mission endurance record that stood for over a decade.
