Mars Pathfinder validated the low-cost 'faster, better, cheaper' Discovery-class mission paradigm and proved airbag EDL as a viable Mars landing technique. The lander base station acted as communications relay for the Sojourner rover, demonstrating the paired lander-rover architecture that would be refined for Spirit and Opportunity. Geochemical data hinted at ancient flood-water activity in Ares Vallis.
