Test & Verification Engineers — also called Systems Test Engineers or I&T (Integration & Test) Engineers — subject hardware and software to the most brutal environments on Earth before they face the ones in space. From thermal vacuum chambers and vibration tables to EMC/EMI sweeps and acoustic testing, this role ensures every subsystem survives launch and performs on orbit. Failures found in the test lab are cheap; failures found in space are program-ending.
Core coursework in structural dynamics, electronics, thermal systems, and control theory. Lab courses involving sensors, data acquisition (DAQ), and instrumentation are directly applicable. Hands-on experience in a university CubeSat or rocket team provides crucial early exposure to hardware I&T.
First role typically involves supporting a senior engineer on environmental test campaigns — writing and executing test procedures, operating TVAC and vibration rigs, logging anomalies in a failure reporting system (FRACAS), and reviewing data. Companies like Orbital ATK, Aerospace Corp, or government FFRDC labs (Draper, MITRE, Aerospace Corp) are common entry points alongside NASA centers.
Own the test plan and test report for a specific subsystem (e.g., propulsion, power electronics, avionics box). Interface directly with the design engineers to translate requirements into test cases. Draft qualification and acceptance test procedures (QTPs/ATPs) to MIL-STD-1540 or ECSS standards. Manage the anomaly disposition process and interact with the customer's quality assurance team.
Responsible for the full spacecraft integration flow — from subsystem delivery through functional testing at the system level, to environmental testing and final acceptance. Coordinate across all engineering disciplines, manage the test schedule on the critical path, and own the as-built configuration. May become the customer's primary technical interface during launch site processing (e.g., at Kennedy Space Center or Vandenberg).
Define the test philosophy and verification approach for new programs at proposal stage. Influence system architecture to improve testability (Design for Test). Mentor junior engineers, lead post-test anomaly review boards, and develop company-wide test standards. Some transition into independent verification and validation (IV&V) roles at NASA IV&V Facility in Fairmont, WV, or into reliability engineering.

The hardest part
Finding a failure — and then living with the fact that you may have caused it. Every anomaly discovered during test delays the program schedule, and every anomaly missed means something potentially fails on orbit. The pressure to clear hardware quickly is constant from program management; the discipline to say 'this vehicle is not ready' requires career backbone. You also spend more time documenting, writing test reports, and managing the as-built configuration than actually running exciting tests — the paperwork-to-hands-on ratio surprises most new engineers.
