Structures and mechanisms engineers design the physical skeleton of a spacecraft and the moving parts that must deploy flawlessly after months in storage. Structures work spans finite element analysis (FEA) in Nastran, Abaqus, or ANSYS, composite layup design (CFRP, GFRP), titanium fittings, and test (vibration, acoustic, shock on a shaker table). Mechanisms add kinematic design — hinges, latches, solar array drives, antenna gimbals, payload doors, and separation systems — where a single stuck latch means mission loss. The role bridges analytical and hands-on: you run FEA Monday and inspect a test article on the shaker Wednesday. Note: non-US salaries at ArianeGroup or ISRO are materially lower than the US commercial benchmarks listed.

Junior Structures Engineer — component-level analysis and test

Run FEA models for brackets, panels, or frames. Write stress analysis reports for PDR. Attend vibration and acoustic testing; correlate test data with the FEA model to within ±3 dB.
Senior Structures / Mechanisms Engineer — subsystem ownership

Own the structural mass budget and margin compliance for a bus or payload. Lead mechanisms trade studies (pyrotechnic vs. NiTi shape-memory vs. motorised). Responsible for test readiness reviews.
Principal Structures Engineer or Structures & Mechanisms Lead
~2 years
Define structural requirements for a full vehicle. Approve load analysis cycle results. Chair vibration and acoustic pre-test predictions with the customer and NASA/ESA IRB. Guide 5–20 engineers.

The hardest part

Test-analysis correlation. Your FEA model predicts 480 Hz for the first structural mode; the shaker test finds it at 412 Hz. That 14% error must be explained and corrected before launch, while the schedule assumes it would pass first time. Hunting for a missed stiffness contribution in a 200,000-element model — often caused by a fastener joint stiffness assumption made three years ago — is where most junior engineers spend their first sleepless nights.
