Viking 1 Lander became the first spacecraft to successfully land on Mars and operate long-term, transmitting data for over six years. Its biology package produced tantalising but inconclusive results: the Labeled Release experiment showed positive signals, but the GC-MS found no organics, leaving the question of Martian life unresolved. It remains the longest-operating Mars lander until InSight surpassed its record.
