Key Findings

Mission Outcome

Viking 2 Lander provided complementary data to Viking 1 at a higher-latitude site, demonstrating that the Martian surface chemistry was consistent across separated locations. Its detection of water frost in 1979 was one of the first direct observations of water in any form on the Martian surface. The lander operated for over three and a half years before battery failure ended the mission.
