Spacecraft thermal engineers control the temperature of every component aboard a mission — from cryogenic detector arrays that must stay at 4K (James Webb-class instruments) to lithium-ion battery packs that must never exceed 25°C during peak recharge. The discipline is 70% analysis (thermal desktop orbital heating models, SINDA/FLUINT transient network solvers, Monte Carlo Radiative Analysis) and 30% hardware (multi-layer insulation (MLI) blanket design and installation, radiator panel sizing, thermal interface material (TIM) selection, heater circuit design with thermistors and thermocouples). Familiarity with Python scripting and MATLAB for post-processing thermal telemetry is now standard. Note: ESA staff thermal engineers earn on the AD5–AD8 scale (€60K–€110K); ISRO salaries are materially lower than the US figures here.
Heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation), thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics are the essential foundation. An undergraduate research project involving thermal measurements or CFD is highly valued.
Learn Thermal Desktop (C&R Technologies) or ESATAN-TMS (UK standard). Thesis involving orbital thermal modelling or cryogenic system design gives a strong entry profile.
Build thermal models for electronics boxes. Run worst-case hot/cold analysis for PDR. Size heater circuits and select thermistors. Participate in thermal-vacuum (TVAC) chamber testing campaigns.
Own the spacecraft thermal control system (TCS) from Phase B through launch. Size radiators, design MLI blanket layout, write the thermal analysis report. Lead the TVAC acceptance and qualification test campaigns.
Define thermal architecture for new platforms or missions. Review and approve subsystem thermal models. Develop thermal margins policy. Support on-orbit anomaly resolution via telemetry analysis and model updates.

The hardest part
On-orbit thermal anomaly resolution with insufficient telemetry. A heater circuit that behaves perfectly in TVAC starts cycling unexpectedly six months after launch. You have 12 temperature sensors across a 10-component electronics bay and a thermal model built 4 years ago by someone who has since left the company. Reconstructing what changed — a degraded thermal interface, an unexpected shadow from a deployed solar panel, a thermistor calibration drift — with limited data and no ability to inspect the hardware directly is where thermal engineering becomes genuinely hard.
