Honeybee Robotics
Overview
Builds high-reliability drilling, sampling, and robotic mechanisms for space missions. Multi-decade NASA partner. Acquired by Blue Origin in January 2022 to consolidate lunar-surface robotics under one ownership.
Moat: Decades-long heritage of flying space drilling hardware. Built the Perseverance rover's sample-caching drill and the TRIDENT drill for NASA's PRIME-1 ISRU demonstrator (flew on IM-2 March 2025). Now vertically integrated with Blue Origin for lunar surface ops.
Business
Primary customers
- Government: NASA (CLPS PRIME-1, Mars 2020 Perseverance, etc.)
- Commercial: Blue Origin (internal — Blue Moon Mk1 + Mk2)
Sectors
Lunar drills · Mars drills · Sample acquisition · Robotics R&D
Key Products
- TRIDENT lunar drill (PRIME-1)operational
1-meter sample-acquisition drill for NASA's first lunar polar water-ice prospecting mission. Demonstrated full range-of-motion in space on IM-2 March 2025.
First flight: 2025-03-06
- Perseverance rover drill (Mars 2020)operational
Sample-caching drill on NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance rover. Currently caching samples for Mars Sample Return.
First flight: 2020-07-30
- AstroAnt (proposed)development
Small lunar surface inspection robot concept.
Near-term Catalysts
- 2027-2028
PRIME-1 / TRIDENT follow-on mission
Second-generation drilling mission targeting actual ice extraction (vs IM-2's range-of-motion demo).
- 2027-2030
Blue Moon Mk2 surface tooling integration
Internal demand from Blue Origin parent for Artemis V-era sustained surface operations.
Top Risks
- Single-mission concentration on PRIME-1 follow-ons.
- As a Blue Origin subsidiary, external customer pipeline depends on parent's strategic priorities.
Recent Milestones
- 2022-01
Acquired by Blue Origin
- 2025-03-06
TRIDENT drill demonstrated full range of motion on IM-2 Athena (lander tipped on landing, limiting full ice-extraction sequence)
