TRL Space
Overview
TRL Space is a Czech mission integrator that designs, builds, and operates complete small-satellite missions — from mission analysis and MAIT (manufacturing, assembly, integration, testing) through launch, operations, and data delivery. Revenue streams include: (1) Earth Observation data sales from the TROLL hyperspectral satellite to government and commercial customers; (2) ESA prime-contractor fees for LUMI and LUGO lunar missions; (3) geospatial intelligence (TRULY Intelligence brand) sold to defence and environmental agencies; (4) satellite hardware and subsystems supplied to third parties via its group companies (Zaitra for AI processing, Corac Engineering for cybersecurity).
Moat: Only Czech company to act as ESA prime contractor for two independent exploratory lunar missions (LUMI and LUGO), a distinction unprecedented in Central/Eastern Europe. TROLL's onboard AI (Zaitra-built) and Corac cybersecurity layer create a vertically integrated stack that competitors cannot easily replicate. Petr Kapoun chairs the Brno Space Cluster, giving preferred access to the region's 1,000+ space engineers. The 10% regional chamber equity stake provides institutional continuity and public procurement access.

Key Products
- TROLLoperational
6U CubeSat hyperspectral Earth observation satellite with 4.75 m GSD, 20 km swath, up to 32 spectral bands (442–884 nm), onboard AI processing by Zaitra, and Corac end-to-end encryption. First Czech privately funded EO satellite.
First flight: 2025-01-14
- TROLL NGdevelopment
8U next-generation hyperspectral CubeSat with improved onboard processing and X-band high-rate downlink. Successor to TROLL.
- LUMI (Lunar Mapper and Inspector)development
ESA-funded microsatellite mission targeting the Moon's South Pole. TRL Space is prime contractor; consortium includes CrystalSpace, University of Tartu, Tyvak International, and Konkoly Observatory. Aims to produce the highest-resolution European lunar maps.
- LUGO (Lunar Geology Orbiter)development
~200 kg ESA exploratory mission to study lunar Irregular Mare Patches and lava tubes from orbit. TRL Space-led international consortium. Targeted lunar arrival ~2030.
- TRULY Intelligenceoperational
Branded geospatial intelligence product line combining TROLL hyperspectral imagery with Zaitra AI analytics, sold to defence and environmental agencies.
Near-term Catalysts
- 2026–2027
TROLL NG satellite development milestone / launch contract
Second operational EO satellite would allow multi-temporal hyperspectral tasking and accelerate revenue growth from data subscriptions.
- 2026–2027
LUMI Phase A/B completion and ESA mission confirmation
Positive mission confirmation unlocks Phase C/D funding and cements TRL Space as Central Europe's premier deep-space prime contractor.
- 2025–2026
Czech-Ukrainian hyperspectral constellation expansion
Additional satellites in the constellation would dramatically increase revisit rate and data revenue, particularly for defence customers.
- 2026
LUGO Mission Definition Review (Phase A completion)
Passage of MDR unlocks next ESA contract tranche and validates the lunar geology science case attracting international co-investigators.
Top Risks
- Highly ESA-dependent revenue — loss or restructuring of ESA programmes would materially impact the pipeline.
- Small team size (~30–50 across group) creates key-person dependency on Petr Kapoun and a handful of senior engineers.
- TROLL is a single operational satellite; any on-orbit anomaly would eliminate EO revenue until TROLL NG is ready.
- Competitive pressure from larger European EO players (Planet Labs, Satellogic, Airbus Defence & Space) on hyperspectral data pricing.
- Czech Republic's relatively small domestic space budget limits government procurement scale versus Western European peers.
- Lunar missions carry long timescales (LUGO ~2030) with significant technical and budgetary risks over the development lifecycle.
