Umbra
Overview
Sells SAR imagery and tasking as a data service (Spotlight, Dwell and Scan modes) to defence, intelligence and commercial customers, distributed partly via resellers such as e-GEOS; since 2025 also sells flight-proven satellite hardware through a dedicated Space Systems business unit.
Moat: Holds the highest-resolution commercial SAR licence and demonstrated imagery in the world (16 cm resolution released after NOAA lifted temporary restrictions), and is one of only three SAR providers the NRO retained on contract alongside Capella and ICEYE.

- Government: National Reconnaissance Office
- Defense: SpaceWERX / SDA / DIU
- Commercial: Commercial imagery resellers (e.g. e-GEOS)

Key Products
- Umbra SAR microsatellite constellationoperational
X-band SAR microsatellites in ~560 km sun-synchronous orbit; 25 cm standard commercial resolution, 16 cm demonstrated. ~5 satellites active as of mid-2026 against a stated 32-sensor end state — not yet complete.
First flight: 2021-06
- Umbra imagery productsoperational
Spotlight, Dwell and Scan collection modes, plus an open-data program.
- Space Systems business unitoperational
Flight-proven US-made satellite hardware and components (including "Sync Release") sold to third-party operators.
- Wide-area maritime SAR spacecraftdevelopment
Next-generation constellation for open-ocean search-and-find, funded under SpaceWERX STRATFI.
Near-term Catalysts
- 2026
NRO contract re-compete
The extension chain runs out; retention or loss of a top-three SAR slot is the single biggest revenue event.
- 2026-2027
STRATFI wide-area maritime spacecraft development
Converting the up-to-$60M SpaceWERX/SDA/DIU vehicle into flying hardware would move Umbra from imagery vendor to programme-of-record supplier.
- 2026
Reston, Virginia facility build-out and 100+ hires
A deliberate build-out of proximity to the intelligence-community customer base.
Top Risks
- Government revenue concentration — NRO plus SpaceWERX/SDA/DIU dominate the order book, and the NRO contract runs on short extensions rather than a long programme of record.
- Constellation gap — roughly 5 active satellites against a stated 32-sensor plan means revisit rate remains well short of the pitch, while Capella and ICEYE compete for the same NRO slots.
- Opaque balance sheet — no disclosed funding round since 2021 and no public valuation, so capital adequacy to build out 32 sensors cannot be verified from any primary source.
